[Fry] [The Tank] [My
Guppies]
To begin with you will need:
. Female guppy (Never been pregnant)
. Male guppy (Preferably young)
. 1 2 ½ - 3 ½ gallon tank (bare tank
for breeding)
. 1 2 ½ - 3 ½ gallon tank for male juvenile
fry
. 1 2 ½ - 3 ½ gallon tank for female
juvenile fry
Parental Female: Make sure you select a female, which
has never had fry; she must be in good condition and if at all possible
be reasonably young. Colouration should be taken note of seems you may
have this particular colour for years if your strain works out.
Parental
male: The male must be young, the older the fish, the less
healthy fry the male will produce. The colour of the male will show
up more in your fry than the colour of your female, but this is not
exact, so have a colour that you like the most – including pattern.
Fry
separation: Once you are able to tell the gender of the fry;
move to separate tanks without delay. The tanks can have gravel and
plants in or whatever you wish. These fish can be sold.
Starting with the parental pair:
The parental-male and parental-female will need to be placed in a 2
½ - 5 ½ gallon tank with no plants or gravel – if
the tank has a clear underside; place the needed amount of black (or
dark coloured) paper underneath it to stop the dazzle of the tank hurting
the fishes eyes (even better paint it black). Within the hour the parental-female
should have been mated with – but it is crucial that you keep
the pair together for at-least a week. – After a week take the
parental-male to his own aquarium with other males for company (and
with no females). By now the parental-female’s gravid spot should
be visible – it is when the gravid spot gets to a reasonably bigger
size and darker in colouration that you will need to move her into a
“fry tank” (for the fry to be born in). the fry tank must
have gravel and plants (artificial or real).
Once the
fry are born remove the parental-female and place her in her own aquarium
preferably with other females for company (and no males).

Breeding
the first “set”:
Wait until the fry are 1 week old before you separate them (or as quick
as you can) – *separate the males from the females and place the
males in a spare tank and place the females in the female in a spare
tank (or you could leave the females in the fry tank to save time and
money). When the fry are a month old select the best male and the best
female – the leftover guppies can be sold to other people or pet
stores. Make sure you choose the healthiest over the most colourful,
‘healthy fish give healthy fry’. Move the your chosen pair
into the breeding tank – After a week take the male to his own
aquarium with other males for company (and with no females). By now
the female’s gravid spot should be visible – it is when
the gravid spot gets to a reasonably bigger size and darker in colouration
that you will need to move her into a “fry tank” so she
can give birth.
As soon as
possible; remove her and place her in a female tank preferably with
other females for company (and no males).
Breeding
the second “set”:
Separate the second “set” fry as soon as possible into the
*correct tanks. Choose one male from this set (set 2) – and place
him In the bare breeding tank with the parental-female (in essence his
grandma) – let them breed – place fry from parental-female
in fry tank and place the male that just mated with her in a male tank.
Choose one female from set 2 and place her in the bare breeding tank
with the Parental male (in essence her granddad) – let them breed
– place fry from the female in the fry tank and place the Parental
male back in the male tank. The fry that come out of this will usually
be a pure strain of your chosen colours from the parental fish. If you
do not succeed, try - try again :)
